Epistar’s “white chip” redefines meaning of LED chips and makes function of LED chip completed. Without lead frame and wire bonding in traditional package process, white chip simplified the structure of a light emitting component. White chip contributes higher lumen output, better thermal dissipation, and stable reliability. White chip also has superior thermal resistance ability, thermal shock test durability from -45°C to 120°C and it is antistatic. Epistar’s white chip contributes higher light intensity and wider bean angle, so it is easy for optical design and reduces quantity of LEDs in a backlight unit. For this reason, BOM cost decreases and quantity of LEDs becomes 1/2, 50% of power consumption is saved as well. For example, 32 inch direct type LED TV which adopted Epistar’s white chip, quantity of LEDs in a backlight unit has been reduced to 15 pcs, even 12 pcs. Direct type LED TV’s backlight unit usually adopts solution of “LED package + lens” to spread intensive light to side-emitting and usually in groups with diffuser plate to offer better color uniformity of light. Epistar’s white chip is structured with a kind of special optical film which is able to adjust beam angle and light intensity without lens. Adjusting light pattern to the effect similar to side-emitting is also possible. In conclusion, hopefully Epistar’s white chip enables the same light effect in direct type TV backlight unit without lens, saving not only the cost of lens but also the expensive process of positioning lens. The most important thing is, this change makes LED TV thinner and closer to consumers’ preference. These products have been used in several worldwide leading LED TV companies. Due to white chip’s superior ability similar to a package, traditional supply chain of backlight unit changed and chip makers are able to obtain business from LED TV makers. In the end, the LED TV turns thinner, consumes less electricity, also becomes more eco-friendly.
