Key Features
The mica group is a large group with nearly 30 members recognized, but only a few are common. Muscovite mica and Phlogopite are more common mica minerals.
Muscovite Mica is a grey-white colored Potassium-Aluminium phyllosilicate mineral.
Mica particles consist of flat plates with a high aspect ratio and a glossy, sparkling appearance.
These lamellar particles are flexible, tough, relatively soft, have a low co-efficient of thermal expansion, exceptional electrical properties and excellent chemical resistance.
Mica is a reinforcing agent that will impart excellent dimensional stability of molded parts. Some of its advantages include low warp, excellent electrical properties, reduced flammability, reduced creep, planar reinforcement and excellent resistance to weathering and corrosive attack by acids of alkalis.
Construction
Mica powder can be added to wall boards to reduce shrinkage, increase thermal insulation and improve resistance to fire. Mica is often added to fire-resistant cements and plaster to improve their fire resistance and thermal stability.
Coatings
Mica is regularly used as a filler in paints and wall coverings where its natural glossy appearance can be used to modify the sheen of an applied coating.
Mica is an ideal additive for specialized coatings forming a barrier against chemical attack and reducing permeability.
It is also used in heat-resistant paints to enhance thermal stability and temperature performance.
Polymers
Mica is used as an inert filler in the manufacture of thermoplastic polymers where it provides increased rigidity, dimensional stability and abrasion resistance as well as improved performance at higher temperatures.
Other Application
Mica can be used in metal casting to provide improved surface finish of the castings and dimensional stability of the moulds.
Because the flat plates of Mica readily slide past each other, providing a natural lubricating property, it is used in the manufacture of mould release coatings and greases.
